Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2: 6 Things You Need To Know
3. The Joke Rate Is Fantastic (The Songs Not Quite So Much)
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's first season was hilarious. The jokes ran the full gamut of humour, from ones that embodied the naivety and out-of-touch nature of Kimmy ("hashbrown no filter"), to showcasing just how privileged Jacqueline is ("You look like a million bucks!” “I know you didn’t mean that to be hurtful…"), to addressing issues such as racism and sexism ("I got treated better as a werewolf than I ever did as a black man. That’s messed up.").
Thankfully that continues to be the case in Season 2, as the jokes come at an incredible rate, and pretty much all of them hit. There's one about Rev. Wayne that is particularly fantastic, while another directs its ire at those who hurl abuse in the comments sections of websites (just sayin'...). It's a good reminder that, while this show may be goofy and weird, it's also very sharply written, and even if a joke doesn't land, there's another one right behind it that will.
On the flip-side, there's also a lot of music in the first of this season, and most of it coming from Titus. His Pinot Noir song was one of the breakout moments of the first year, transcending the show to become a hit in its own right, and at times it does feel like they're really trying to capitalise on the success of it. It feels like he's singing multiple times per episode, and it's a bit hit-and-miss, without coming close to Pinot Noir.
Kimmy gets in on the action too, and that I will give credit to, because you'll find yourself singing 'bunny and kitty' way past the credits of that episode.
