Maeve's past life, and in particular her daughter, have an increasingly important impact on the character as the series progresses.

Throughout the season, we see flashes of a previous encounter with the Man in Black, and eventually we get to see it play out in full - and why.

The Man in Black kills both Maeve and her daughter, and his explanation is nothing more than he wanted to see how far he could push things. To see if he could do something "truly evil."

Maeve lashing out at him, meanwhile, is what inspired him to keep on returning, and seek out the deeper level of the park.
