Hannibal was a television adaptation of Thomas Harris' beloved suspense novels which revolve around the cannibalistic serial killer, Hannibal Lecter. Even though the show wasn't allowed to implement story elements from the most famous Hannibal novel, The Silence of the Lambs, the series was hailed as a masterpiece. But due to plummeting ratings, the show abruptly ended after only three seasons. In the final episode, Dr. Will Graham grabbed Hannibal Lecter before lunging off a cliff, seemingly dying.

The creator, Bryan Fuller, envisioned Hannibal as a seven-season show and had tons of ideas lined up. Graham and Hannibal would survive their fall (somehow), and go on the run, much like how Hannibal and Clarice ran away together at the end of the Hannibal novel. They would be forced into a conflict with Hannibal's student, Alana Bloom, who escaped the serial killer in the previous season.

Fuller hoped he could get the rights for The Silence of the Lambs so he could introduce Clarice Starling, who would be tasked with bringing Hannibal to justice. Fuller wanted Ellen Page to play the role of Clarice.

In 2017, Fuller stated he was having talks about reviving the show but nothing has been heard since.
