8 Things You Need To Know About The Women Of Game Of Thrones Season 6

6. Melisandre's On An Extraordinary Journey

Ironic, or maybe unsurprising, that for a woman who puts so much faith in flames, her plans went up in smoke last year.

After convincing Stannis to let her burn Shireen at the stake, her Red Magic backfired as the Mannis was still defeated by the Bolton army, and he himself killed by Brienne of Tarth.

She arrived back at the Wall in the finale, just in time for Jon Snow's death, and the biggest theory about Jon's resurrection is that Melisandre will be the one to bring him back. Of course, she doesn't have that power yet as far as we know, but still, theories! Carice van Houten has recently hinted that she won't be the one bringing Jon back, telling Empire:

"I’m afraid I’m gonna disappoint a lot of people. Why so much pressure on my character? I mean, I understand that he’s the good we want in this crazy world...But Melisandre has never brought anyone back to life. Why does it have to be me?"

Note that's not an outright denial, of course, and it is still the favourite theory for how Jon comes back, what with her continued presence at the Wall and interest in Jon last year.

The Season 6 trailer, meanwhile, showed her feeling pretty downhearted about the whole 'Stannis getting killed' thing, as she says: "The great victory I saw in the flames, it was a lie." With Stannis dead and her at the Wall, it's going to bring her together more with Davos this season, with Liam Cunningham (who plays the Onion Knight) calling them "strange bedfellows."

Speaking with Vulture, Cunningham added that Melisandre is on an extraordinary journey right from the off in Season 6, teasing:

"[It's] Very surprising. It's really cool. When I read it, I went, 'Whoa!'"
