4. The Voiceover Is Occasionally Expositional
It's hard to take voiceover seriously at the best of times as the narrator is essentially telling the viewer what they should be seeing instead. This is an issue that is particularly prevalent in novel adaptations, as the writers struggle to bring the book to life without the very element that gives it its voice in the first place. YOU, however, is the exception to that rule.
From the well-written monologues to Penn Badgley's exceptionally serious and self-important delivery of them, they add character to the show, gifting it with a unique soundtrack of sorts that essentially makes you feel like you are reading a novel instead of watching a TV show. However, the beginning of the second season struggles to get the balance right, as it often shifts from characterising monologue to expositional gap-filler - even when we're watching those gaps play out on-screen.
Little more than a side-effect of the time-jump to recycle the Candace return later in the season, it was only noticeable because of how masterful the voiceovers usually are. Nonetheless, we noticed.
