YOU Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
3. The Narrative Gets A Little Convoluted At Times
There was a lot going on in YOU Season 2. Like, seriously though.
First and foremost, you had the familiar central narrative in which our protagonist Joe Goldberg (or Will Bettelheim as he was calling himself now) fell head over heels in love with an alluring woman and was willing to do anything for her - yes, anything. Then you had the neighbours Delilah and Ellie Alves and their ties to celebrity Henderson - an arc that also took its cues from Season 1 in a bid to humanise Joe. There was also the Quinn family and all the drama that came with that and, of course, the game-changer: Candace's reintroduction. A lot, right?
However, there were times it felt like the show just kept heaping more and more onto the story in a bid just to add extra drama. Was Joe's run-in with the original Will Bettelheim's mob enemy (and the subsequent loss of his finger) really necessary? What about the multiple Henderson house parties? Granted, they all pointed him in the direction he needed to be going, but upon reflection, none of them felt justified in taking up as much time as they did, and occasionally felt like they were just unnecessary obstacles to drag Joe's story out for 10 episodes.
YOU's ability to quickly produce bonkers scenarios is second-to-none, but given how much this season already had going for it, it could have toned it down once or twice along the way.
