YOU Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
6. The Supporting Characters Are Better
The supporting characters of YOU's first season were intentionally written in a way that would make you question, persecute and even hate some of them. Sure, we were supposed to hate all of Beck's friends as the story was told from Joe's perspective, but aside from that, they weren't that great. Not all of them were bad people, but few of them (aside from Paco and his mother) were particularly likable.
Season 2, however, decides to take a refreshing spin on that. While the subplot once again produced strong, well-developed characters in Delilah and Ellie, the show also ensured that all of Love's friends were that much more bearable than Beck's. It's done rather cleverly too, as the writers subvert our expectations, taking characters that we thought wouldn't have a lot going on under the surface and adding an enormous amount of depth, bringing them to life through their own worries, passions and struggles.
From the edgy Lucy Sprecher to Love's troubled twin brother Forty Quinn, YOU's second offering is a more inclusive story that makes full use of a vastly rich line-up of supporting characters. And, quite frankly, it's all the better for it.
