YOU Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

5. The Story Is Very Well Put-Together

YOU Joe Forty
Netflix

YOU's first season told a uniquely compelling story about one man's desire to be loved, all while dancing around why he behaved in the way that he did. It was written in a way that was designed to make us ask more questions than anything else, and it did just that. The second season borrows that formula, but it also uses it to shed some light on those unanswered mysteries - making for a more complete story.

We've already mentioned how the season has a lot going on (and it really does), but it manages to juggle all of the important stuff really well. Candace's comeback and subsequent revenge plots slot in nicely with Joe's latest infatuation with Love and her family, while Delilah and Ellie's familial issues surrounding Henson also effectively play into the narrative - giving Joe a believable subplot that shows us a different side to his personality (much like his friendship with Paco in Season 1).

Forty's character arc particularly complements the narrative, as his surprising depth of character, his emotional backstory and his relationships (both past and present) with Love, Joe, Henson, Ellie and Candace/Amy is something of a glue that ultimately allows everything to slot into place.

Could it all have been done in an episode or two less? Maybe, but the whole thing is so intricately-plotted that it's hard not to admire what the writers have done here - and that makes even the more annoying contrivances forgivable.
