YOU: Why You're Wrong To Love Penn Badgley’s Joe

1. The Concerning Trend Of Romanticizing Serial Killers

With Badgley's Joe, one might think we'd have enough of creepy serial killers made likable in popular media for quite some time. However, with Ted Bundy movie released at the start of the year, it seems we're only getting started.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile, directed by Joe Berlinger, follows the story of the notorious serial killer of America, Ted Bundy, who confessed to murdering 30 women. However, with Zac Efron in the role of Bundy, many critics said that the movie is basically like a "rockstar biopic" and it's hard not to agree with them - not when he's played by one Hollywood's golden boys. But it's not Efron's portrayal of Bundy that people are thirsting over, no. It's the actual Ted Bundy. The man who raped, killed and later defiled his victims.

Finding a fictional character hot certainly pales in comparison to wanting to be choked by Ted Bundy and this concerning phenomenon deserves more than a case study itself. Yet, it's important to notice that by allowing people to romanticize characters such as Joe, we are slowly becoming immune to the kind of behavior he represents in the show. More than that - we start allowing it.

And while not every seemingly harmless stalker will turn out to be a serial killer, none of actions taken by Joe should ever be accepted.
