The Doctor Who title sequence is truly iconic. Even casual TV viewers and non-Doctor Who fans are familiar with that time vortex and that famous music – at this point, it's just part of the cultural consciousness.

As a result, it's always exciting when a brand-new Doctor is about to debut, because they'll usually bring a brand-new title sequence with them.

This was the case back in the early 2000s, and in the run-up to the Ninth Doctor's much-anticipated revival series, there was a lot of discussion about what the new title sequence might look and sound like.

Out of this discussion spawned an odd rumour that heavy metal band Slipknot was "in talks" to record that all-important theme tune. Apparently, the members of the band were big Doctor Who fans, and they even dedicated a song from their then-upcoming album (Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses) to the show.

Ultimately it was composer Murray Gold who arranged the theme tune, just like he did for the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors. And what a cracking job he did, we must say.

Weirdly though, Slipknot did make a creative contribution to Doctor Who around a decade after this rumour did the rounds, when the band's lead singer, Corey Taylor, provided the roar sound effect for the Fisher King in the 2015 episode Before The Flood.

Maybe the person spreading the original rumour was from the future, and they just got things muddled?
