10 Awesome Wrestlers With Surprisingly Bad WrestleMania Records
Former world champions, Hall of Famers, and more...
Competing at WrestleMania is on many a wrestler's bucket list. WWE's flagship pay-per-view has completely transcended professional wrestling since its 1985 inception, and has become an event bigger than the sport itself. It's the focal point of WWE's entire calendar year, and while WrestleMania doesn't always deliver between the ropes, it never fails to be an impressive spectacle.
Triumphing at 'Mania is often the biggest win of a wrestler's career, and many spend years chasing their own "WrestleMania moment". For some, success comes easily. The Undertaker's 23-1 record is the most obvious example, but wrestlers like Bret Hart (8-6), John Cena (9-3), and Steve Austin (5-2) have seen their careers go stratospheric on the back of their impressive WrestleMania records.
Winning at 'Mania is extremely difficult, however, and the names listed above are extraordinary cases. Most wrestlers will be lucky to break even throughout their WrestleMania careers, and leaving WWE with a winning record is becoming increasingly rare. In fact, some of the most successful wrestlers in WWE history have struggled to build a strong win/loss record at WrestleMania, and the event's past is littered with major stars who rarely won at the biggest show of the year.
Surprisingly bad WrestleMania records didn't harm these guys' careers.
10. Shelton Benjamin (1-6)
You can almost guarantee Shelton Benjamin’s name will come-up whenever underutilised WWE midcarders are discussed. One of the most athletic wrestlers in WWE history, Benjamin wasn’t much of a talker, but his in-ring skills were undeniable. He was as flashy and eye-catching as they come, but he was never able to break the glass ceiling, despite going down as one of the best Intercontinental Champions in recent WWE history.
WWE never showed a great deal of faith in Shelton, particularly on the biggest show of the year. His sole WrestleMania victory came in 2003, when he and Charlie Haas defeated Los Guerreros and Chris Benoit/Rhyno to retain the WWE Tag Team Titles. They failed in an attempt to win them back the following year, and from there, Benjamin embarked upon his singles run.
Benjamin’s five remaining WrestleMania appearances came in the Money In The Bank Ladder match, and he was unsuccessful on every occasion. He was pegged to return to WWE prior to a failed medical last year, so there’s still a decent chance he’ll eventually get an opportunity to win a big WrestleMania singles match. Until then, however, Shelton Benjamin goes down as one of the least effective wrestlers in 'Mania history, though his acrobatics have highlighted many a MITB match.
