Over the decade between Kofi Kingston's breakout year in 2009 and his eventual world title victory in 2019, fans speculated, dreamed and hoped about the day that Kofi would be allowed to truly capitalise on his potential and become the world champion for the first time in his career. After his initial push, an instance with Randy Orton on Raw led to his relegation to the midcard. The formation of The New Day eventually kickstarted a record breaking tag title reign and increased popularity but he remained a midcarder for years.

But then in 2019, an injury to Mustafa Ali allowed Kofi to take his place in a gauntlet match on SmackDown, working for 40 minutes and creating an organic crowd response that brought out 10 years of desperation. Those reactions were only amplified in the Elimination Chamber match, where he was one of the last two men alongside WWE Champion Daniel Bryan.

He lost there, but eventually he made it to WrestleMania against Bryan and in a historic moment, Kofi won his championship. It is one of the greatest moments and stories in WWE's history and it's very fitting that it happened years later than it should have.
