"The Mega Powers explode!" That was the tagline used to set up the heel WWE Champion Randy Savage defending the title against his former friend Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania V. When Savage won the WWE Title for the first time at WrestleMania IV he was as popular as ever and Hogan was right there to help him whenever he needed it. Their friendship was strong for most of the year, but then things changed at the 1989 Royal Rumble. During the 1989 Rumble match, Hogan did his famous quick elimination of the Warlord, then he dumped Bad News Brown out and also Randy Savage. Savage was furious about it because they were supposed to be friends, but Hulk dumped him out. Savage shoved him, then pointed at him and Miss Elizabeth had to come out to separate them. Savage teamed with Hogan against The Twin Towers during the February 1989 Main Event broadcast. Elizabeth got accidentally knocked down by Savage, so Hogan took her to the back and Hogan went on to beat the Twin Towers by himself after Savage left. Cameras showed them in the medical area checking on Elizabeth. Savage was furious. In what was one of the most famous scenes in wrestling history, Savage told Hogan he was out of line and when Hogan asked Liz to talk sense into Savage, Randy attacked with a title shot to the head. It was a crazy scene that nobody will ever forget. Savage was a rare WWE Champion that turned heel while he was holding the title. That kind of thing didn't happen often, but Savage pulled it off extremely well. They did the turn the right way because Hogan was still beloved and it's not like he was going to turn. All of that led to the WrestleMania V WWE Title match between the men with Hogan winning the WWE title from Savage. Nobody will ever forget when the Mega Powers exploded. It was one of the best builds in WrestleMania history.
