Like the Royal Rumble match, Survivor Series contests will lean on some familiar storytelling tropes to engage the audience. Rey Mysterio fills the role of the valiant, big-hearted underdog - and he fills it like nobody in WWE before or since. Mysterio went undefeated in his first five outings in traditional Survivor Series matchups before his two most recent contests ended in defeat.

A three-time survivor, Rey is fourth on the all-time eliminations list with nine and has provided us with dramatic moments typical of his career as a whole - exemplified by him pinning Big Show in 2005. He is one of the best at upping the pace of a match like this, knowing when to step on the gas when eliminations are beginning to drag down the bout.

Despite never being a sole survivor, Rey has made his mark on the Survivor Series stage across seventeen years. With no match scheduled for the 2020 show, we will have to wait and see whether The Ultimate Underdog will return for a twelfth tussle. There's still a spot open on Team SmackDown, right next to Seth Rollins...
