NFL Hall-of-Famer Lawrence Taylor’s WrestleMania XI appearance goes down as one of the highest-profile celebrity wrestling matches in history, as he headlined the event with Bam Bam Bigelow. Theirs was the most-heavily promoted feud going into the event, and it kicked-off at the 1995 Royal Rumble.

With the crowd heckling him following a tag loss, Bigelow took-out his frustrations by pushing Taylor, who’d been sat at ringside. Bam Bam refused to apologise in the aftermath, and instead challenged the former New York Giants linebacker to a wrestling match. Taylor accepted, and started training with WWE Champion Diesel in the lead-up.

Taylor didn’t exactly put on a wrestling clinic, but he took everything that Bigelow threw at him. The match ended somewhat farcically when a tired Taylor threw back against Bam Bam with some meek strikes, before landing the final one from the top rope to seal the victory. Bigelow’s WWE career never quite recovered, and while he left WWE fans with a number of great memories over the years, he never became the top champion.

Some fans even remember Bigelow more for this match than the rest of his career. A shame, as Bam Bam remains one of the most athletic big men to ever grace the squared circle, but this early WWE/NFL crossover was instrumental in bringing Vince McMahon’s product to a wider audience
