SURPRISE!

Or, maybe not. Now, WWE's Royal Rumble couldn't match the in-ring fare served up in New Japan or even AEW at times, but it was one of the most emotionally pleasing nights in modern wrestling history. Also, the card was still a good 'un, and one of the best 'Road To WrestleMania' kick offs in years.

Roman Reigns vs. 'King' Corbin opened things nicely with a 'Falls Count Anywhere' slugfest, and the women's Rumble followed that neatly (Charlotte Flair was the right winner too). Bayley vs. Lacey Evans felt out of place, but Becky Lynch vs. Asuka in the final female bout harked back to their 2019 effort with serious panache.

It'd be remiss not to mention how hard Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan worked to get their 'Strap' gimmick over, or how pleasant it was to see Edge make his in-ring return after nine years on the shelf. To top it all off, Drew McIntyre received one of the loudest cheers of the year for winning the men's Rumble.

The Rumble might not have been stacked with five-star stunners, but it was a serious highlight of 2020 that should be cherished forever.
