While most of WWE's 2017 NXT call-ups met a dismal fate on the main roster, this can't be said for Samoa Joe. The former TNA and ROH man has been continually presented as a big deal since graduating from developmental, and while much of this is down to the veteran's masterful character work, his employers deserve great credit for the way they've booked him.

'The Samoan Submission Machine' has looked like a beast between the ropes. The company have allowed him to go over some of their biggest names in Roman Reigns, Finn Balor, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins, along with the usual list of squash match victims. This has allowed Joe to build considerable momentum and credibility on Raw, ensuring that he is strong enough to survive the odd notable loss without dealing noticeable damage to his momentum.

Joe's biggest triumph came at Extreme Rules, when he shocked everyone by choking Balor out to become number one contender to the Universal Championship. This booking decision was so successful that it created a considerable clamour for Joe to be coronated, and while this didn't come to fruition, he remains Raw's most searing act.
