Despite having ‘the look’ when he first signed with WWE, John Cena was very much in Brock Lesnar’s shadow when the Beast was laying waste to SmackDown.

No one ever expected the white rapper from Boston who was pretending to be Eminem to ever become a big star. But thanks to his own determination, as well as a series of fortunate circumstances, Cena rose to the main-event level by 2005, and hasn’t looked back since.

By reaching that position, Cena has undergone a radical transformation. His once hip-hop-inspired mannerisms and speech patterns have all but disappeared, and instead of wearing sports team jerseys or even traditional wrestling attire, Cena comes out dressed in his own merchandise like a walking advertisement.

Moreover, his entire outlook has changed dramatically in his role as Champion. All the charity work, Make-A-Wish contributions, and his status as a beloved superhero to millions of children around the world has turned Cena into a walking Super-patriot.

He loves everything about America, accepts that some fans don’t like him, and always walks around with this wholesome attitude about him as if he were Captain America himself.

Cena’s transformation is just like the character he portrays: filled with both positives and negatives, depending on who you ask. While he’s an ideal company spokesman and great person, his character is one of the most polarizing and repetitive in WWE history.
