Vader won the night’s opening match against ‘The Artist Formally Known As’ Goldust. That bout is best remembered for the big man hitting the Vader Bomb with his opponent’s manager, Luna Vachon, on his back. So, when he arrived at #30 he inevitably went straight for Goldust, who had been in the match so long his face paint had been washed off. The Honky Tonk Man broke the attack with a double axe handle, which Vader shrugged off before swiftly throwing the legendary Intercontinental Champion to the outside.

Vader returned to wailing on ‘The Bizarre One’. However, the two were soon lost in the brawling bodies. Vader left his rival to take on new challengers. He landed some stiff strikes on The Rock and tussled with Faarooq near the ropes. Goldust capitalised on the distraction and eventually clotheslined Vader out of the match.

Vader should have been booked in the 1998 Rumble as a monster and credible threat. Instead, he was served up to Goldust, a comedy character and a parody of the initially sinister gimmick. During this period, he was better known for his outrageous S&M lifestyle and outfits than his wrestling ability.
