7. Sgt. Slaughter's Feud With Triple H Was Woefully Dull
Speaking of lame, Sgt. Slaughter was a poor choice to go head-to-head with D-Generation X towards the end of 1997. Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Chyna were endlessly more hip and cool than the aging Slaughter, who played the role of WWF Commissioner around this time. It was really hard for fans to rally behind the authority figure, especially considering he had become largely retired. There was a flaw in the angle from the very start. On one side, fans were starting to embrace the anti-authority of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, and loved seeing him throw up the middle finger and drink beer. D-Generation X may have been heels, but they were still cool. On the other hand, Sgt. Slaughter was a corporate stiff who felt out of touch with the younger audience by this point. Topping things off, Triple H and Slaughter had a interminable match at the In Your House: D-Generation X Pay-Per-View in December. The show is largely regarded as the worst of the year, and it's hard to argue that when it included bouts like the 'Bootcamp Match' between this odd pairing. There were loads of choices for a feud with Triple H, and 'Sarge' wasn't among them.
