6. The Misadventures Of The Flying Nuns

The Flying Nuns gimmick was a potential catastrophe averted when Vince McMahon elected not to bother dying on a hill for a one-note joke for a change, but the early appearance of The Headbangers on the chaotic Shotgun Saturday Night in early-1997 in nun attire wasn't intended to be one-and-done.

Featured on the episode were skits in which 'Sister Angelica' and 'Mother Smucker' visited New York religious landmarks ahead of their pairing with Bruce Prichard's Brother Love. Such investment implies that WWE weren't exactly thinking small for the personas even if the idea was incredibly small-minded.

The future Mosh and Thrasher had already debuted as The Headbangers in 1996 before the gimmick was trotted out in the North East nightclub in January, despite the fact that their metal-loving personas had a greater chance of thriving in the stripped-back setting than the very cartoonish alternative.

Even on commentary, Vince McMahon couldn't mask his growing indifference for a gimmick he'd obviously had much to do with, and the pair were reverted to their substantially more successful Marilyn Manson-inspired attire.
