10 Compelling Contenders For John Cena's US Title Open Challenges
6. The New Day
Now here’s a fun choice to answer the open challenges. Imagine if you will, week after week, a different member of the now heel New Day answers the open challenge and attempting to take Cena’s United States Championship. Week 1, Xavier Woods is the challenger, and while he gets his licks in on Cena, he is unable to overcome the United States Champion. The following week it is Kofi Kingston who takes his shot. He comes even closer than Xavier came to knocking off Cena, but despite the interference of his New Day brothers, Cena prevails again. Finally Big E takes his turn, and comes within a fraction of a second of defeating John Cena, only to miraculously lose to Cena’s last ditch effort to escape with his title.
After that series of matches, The New Day could finally snap and beat down Cena, showing an edge all three men have never shown before. Not capturing the United States Championship could be what makes these three men stop clapping. It’s a multi-week arc and a riveting narrative with a magnificent payoff at the end. It could lead to Cena feuding with the 3 members of The New Day for a little while, or it could be the beginning of something totally new for those men.
There is even the possibility of broaching the subject of race in an interesting and meaningful way, given that Cena is a white rapper that was propelled to the top, in part due to his inclusion of hip hop culture into his persona, while Kofi, Xavier and Big E toiled in the mid-card and have been met with nothing but disdain since banding together. They could be tired of the fact that America at large loves black culture, when it comes in the form of John Cena. Now that would be a provocative and topical angle if there ever was one.
