10 Dream Wrestling Matches That Didn't Deliver
2. Hulk Hogan Vs. Sting (Starrcade 1997)
Hulk Hogan's name keeps popping up on this list - and it's not because anyone's going into his matches expecting five-star classics, but they were continually guilty of delivering screwy finishes that took away from the occasion.
Another good case in point is his headline bout with Sting at Starrcade 1997, an era-defining match that followed months of build-up wherein WCW's face-painted vigilante was billed as the only man capable of bringing down the New World Order.
And, granted, he did end up taking Hogan's WCW World Title. It's just that he did so after a bizarre ending in which Bret Hart - ostensibly a good guy - called a fast-count by ref Nick Patrick to overturn a seemingly legitimate Hogan win, after which the Hitman took over as ref and slapped the mat for the Stinger's coronation. The narrative didn't correspond with the visual; for all intents, Hogan wuz robbed.
That's not generally how the triumphant good guy is supposed to vanquish the villain. It'd be like Superman only being able to defeat Lex Luthor because Batman came in to lend a helping hand. It just takes the shine off it all.
