10 Dream Wrestling Matches That Were Huge Disappointments
6. Roddy Piper Vs Hollywood Hogan - Starrcade '96
In their ever desperate quest for relevance and increased pay-per-view buys WCW often tried to relive and recreate many of Hogan's iconic feuds from the WWF, in hopes of emulating the same success. As such, Rowdy Roddy Piper was brought in to oppose Hogan and the NWO. After months of worked shoot interviews, segments and angles, a non-title match was booked for Starrcade '96. The match was heavily advertised, over-hyped, talked about and promoted, but what the match ended up being did not live up to any manner of reasonable expectation. Over six minutes into an eighteen minute match and neither man had struck the other. Piper put Hogan into a headlock, then a rest hold, Hogan reverses it and does the same. The next ten minutes were essentially the same. Slow strikes, rest holds and grapples galore - both men seemed genuinely exhausted from the get go. The match continued in the same way until The Giant interfered and failed to have any real affect, Hogan then lost to Piper's sleeper-hold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grnn_M8GKe0 The match was mediocre in every way, even the finish was obvious due to the fact it was a non-title match. After a few more mediocre matches, the Hogan/Piper feud was dropped.
