He wasn't even first choice to face Triple H.

Sting did the honours as asked at WrestleMania 31, but he wasn’t ever supposed to be Hunter’s opponent. In fact, it was Batista who was meant to rival his old Evolution stablemate on the show and keep their longstanding on/off story burning. Unfortunately for WWE, 2014 saw a Batista-sized double whammy.

Dave was left with a bad taste in his mouth following that 2014 run. Then, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon laughed at his pitch to return again at SummerSlam amidst Guardians Of The Galaxy hype. Both joked that the movie would flop. Guardians raked it in at the box office and turned dishy Dave into a Hollywood hot ticket.

So, because of that, he was able to give WWE the finger after spurning his ideas. Take that, Authority. Batista vs. Triple H was taken off the table, and creative had to scramble to come up with something else. That's when Sting fell into their laps right at the end of 2014.
