SummerSlam should've been different too.

Sting was supposed to team with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose vs. Wyatt Family gang Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, but then Rowan suffered a torn bicep injury and had to pull out. WWE quietly shelved the Stinger surprise too, and had ex-Shield duo Roman and Dean battle Bray and Harper in a regular tag instead.

That six-man was geared to be Sting’s tune up match for a clash with Seth Rollins at Night Of Champions the following month. WWE chiefs considered Braun Strowman as a fill-in for Rowan on the night, but decided against it days prior to the pay-per-view. That scrapped what would've been Stinger's only SummerSlam appearance.

Night Of Champions softened the blow financially because Sting was in the main event, but it'd be a painful night for the legend anyway. His career looked to be over for good after suffering a nasty injury following a buckle bomb from Seth late in the match.
