Triple H wasn't the only major player sidelined with injury that spring. One day after "The Game" tore his leg to shreds, Benoit messed up his neck during a special TLC match at the SmackDown tapings. In spite of the injury, Benoit worked a rigorous schedule for the ensuing month, including hard-hitting TV matches with Austin for the WWE Championship, as well as a steel cage match with Angle on the June 11 Raw.

Benoit also didn't skimp on the physicality in the King of the Ring triple threat match. He gave his usual excessive effort en route to taking the pinfall loss from Austin.

"The Canadian Crippler" then disappeared from WWE television, undergoing spinal fusion surgery at the hands of Dr. Lloyd Youngblood. His next match wasn't until more than a year later, teaming with Eddie Guerrero on the July 1, 2002 edition of Raw.
