1999 may have one of 'Taker's best years in terms of character development and main-event status, but it wasn't one of his strongest in-ring offerings. That was down to a number of factors, including injuries (he spent a portion of the year limping) and the simple fact that the Attitude Era thrived on story instead of what happened between the ropes.

That said, his showdown with The Rock at that year's King Of The Ring proved to be the exception to that, as the pair of legends in the making put on one of the most underrated WWE Championship matches of all time.

Soaked in a ton of the overbooked madness that the late '90s relied upon, the two rivals battled all over the arena, knocking down referee after referee in the melee as Paul Bearer (and the Corporate Ministry) attempted to get involved. However, that only added to what was already a great contest.

Yes, it was a storyline-heavy affair, and yes there were a ton of other factors involved here, but the action remained solid throughout, allowing for some great exchanges between The Rock and 'Taker and it all ended in a way that felt completely in-line with the characters involved at the time - while also allowing The Rock to look very strong in defeat.

The legendary superstars never really had a definitive one-on-one feud after this which is undoubtedly unfortunate given how well their careers would develop, so if this underrated gem remains their definitive match, then that's okay with this writer.
