10 Forgotten Classics Of WWE's Ruthless Aggression Era
2. Benoit Vs. Triple H Vs. Shawn Michaels - Backlash 2004
When Chris Benoit, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H squared off at WrestleMania XX, Benoit was far from the favourite to walk out with gold in hand. Nevertheless, when Triple H tapped out to the Crippler Crossface in the centre of the ring, history was made and Chris Benoit became WWE's World Heavyweight Champion for the very first time.
The match itself was an absolute classic, taking place on the 20th anniversary of WrestleMania in the mecca of WWE, Madison Square Garden. However, the rematch a month later was arguably even better. Held in Benoit's hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, the atmosphere was completely different to that of WrestleMania a month before. 100% pro-Benoit, 100% anti-Triple H and, despite his babyface status, 100% anti-HBK as well.
Prior to reaching "untouchable" status as 'Mr. WrestleMania' around 2006, whenever Shawn Michaels stepped foot over the Canadian border, he was on enemy territory. Canadian wrestling fans have long-term memories and Michaels' part in the Montreal Screwjob was still a sore spot for many in 'The Great White North' - particularly on this night.
The match itself has everything you could want from a main event: high octane action with big high spots and a red-hot crowd throughout. Required viewing for any true wrestling fan.
