Of course, Johnny Mundo was already a fairly notable name in the wrestling world when he signed with Lucha Underground in 2014, but at that point, he hadn't competed on a national stage since leaving WWE almost three years earlier.

Lucha Underground gave him the chance to completely reinvent himself, and he made the most of it.

Although he at first fell short of becoming the inaugural Lucha Underground champion, Mundo showed he was as exceptional in the ring as ever and had improved immensely on the mic. That was especially evident once he turned heel, created his own faction in The Worldwide Underground, and held the Lucha Underground Championship hostage for many months.

It came to a point where he had accomplished everything (including killing off Matanza Cueto) and was ready for a new challenge. That was how his move to IMPACT came about in the summer of 2017, and after floundering for a while as a babyface, he hit his stride as a heel and became Impact World champion at Bound for Glory 2018.

His exit from IMPACT over the summer felt a bit abrupt, but it all made sense when it was revealed recently that he had re-signed with WWE after eight years away. It's safe to say that wouldn't have happened had he not evolved into the total package while with Lucha Underground.
