10 Great WWE Matches That Didn't Have A Finish
2. Steve Austin vs Kurt Angle - SummerSlam 2001
In the middle of 2001, WWE found themselves in a gleefully silly period of their lifespan. Vince McMahon had bought his competition, and felt free to make any wild decision he wanted. One such choice was to turn Steve Austin heel, an experiment that rarely worked because fans remained intent on cheering him.
On this night in California, though, it worked perfectly. For an evening, Austin was a veritable villain, and no one profited from this more than Kurt Angle. The Olympic champion was already a top guy, but this match arguably truly made him. He looks superheroic as he chases down the cowardly but vicious Austin, surviving everything the Rattlesnake throws at him then hopping up to hit moonsaults, a bevy of German suplexes, and everything else in his impressive arsenal.
This is great character wrestling, with the paranoid and desperate Austin eventually resorting to a cheap disqualification by way of attacking three referees. Finally corrupt WCW official Nick Patrick hits the ring and puts an end to it all, with Angle taking the DQ win but Austin leaving with his title. A rare DQ finish that doesn’t just make sense but only adds to the frenzied sense of fun.
