This was not on the biggest stage and did not involve the biggest names, but Cody Rhodes turning on Hardcore Holly to join Ted DiBiase Jr was completely original and very well executed.
Rhodes and Holly had been World Tag Team Champions for six months when DiBiase made his RAW debut and promised to take the titles from them in his first WWE match.
His only problem was that he didn’t have a partner. DiBiase came to the ring alone at Night of Champions 2008 and played his part brilliantly, doing the heelish thing of asking the match to be rescheduled, and claiming that his partner would arrive in 10 minutes.
As soon as the bell rang, Rhodes levelled Holly with a DDT and DiBiase made the cover to confirm Cody’s switch of allegiances. The second-generation stars were more natural allies, and the mystery partner being a turncoat from the opposite team was a unique reveal.
