10 Greatest Performers In WrestleMania History
4. Steve Austin
No one did more with less than Stone Cold Steve Austin in WWE. His active duty in the company lasted all of eight years, but in that time he won everything there was to win, helped changed the game forever, and made a truckload of cash.
Accordingly, he didn’t work too many ‘Manias, but the matches he did have were pretty great. To get the bad stuff out of the way, his inaugural match against Savio Vega is forgettable, and his penultimate against Scott Hall comprised two men edging past their prime and not too enthused about their position on the card (though Hall’s selling of the Stunner is a must-see).
Then there’s the rest of it. His coronation against Shawn Michaels at XIV is a wild, overbooked delight. His trilogy against The Rock is era-defining, with the first setting the pair apart as the industry’s best, the second the culmination of an amazing event, and the third a fitting swansong for Austin.
And of course, the aforementioned Bret Hart match at XIII. It could be the best WrestleMania match of all time; as far as structure and storytelling goes, it’s basically unbeatable. It turned Austin into the face of the company, a position he’d occupy until his retirement. It’s the stuff legacies are built on.
