In July 2003 on an episode of RAW, Randy Orton reintroduced himself as 'The Legend Killer'. He went on to successfully see-off the likes of Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam, Mick Foley and The Rock, living up to his new gimmick. It was only a matter of time before fans began speculating... what if Orton was the one to put the one in twelve? Could he kill the 'Deadman''s Streak on the Grandest Stage of Them All?

It was the first time the streak was made a big deal of, as it had only been mentioned more as a fact in previous years rather than a legacy which it was slowly becoming. There was an added brand warfare element too, with Undertaker being on SmackDown and Orton on RAW. To add spice, Orton turned heel, RKO-ing his girlfriend at the time, Stacy Keibler, and taunted 'The Phenom' in the build up.

Their match at 'The Showcase of the Immortals' was a showcase of Orton's then cocky and ungentlemanly conduct, illustrated by his father running in to use his cast as a weapon as well as Randy having the audacity to attempt a Tombstone Piledriver of his own.

The contest was full of near falls and elevated both superstars' legacies. In the words of Tazz on commentary that night, "What a match!"
