2. Grudge Matches
A red hot grudge match is one of the finest things in wrestling. When the booking has gone just right and you’re finally allowing a superstar to get their hands on the person who has made their life hell, it can be electric, the definition of must see TV. The two foes meet in the ring, proceed to knock lumps out of each other - and then the wronged party goes for the pin.
Surely if you’re Matt Hardy, and you’ve finally been given the chance to throw down with Edge, who has stolen your girlfriend, you’d want to keep the fight going for as long as possible. You’d want revenge, to do some serious damage, far more than you’d want another check in the wins column,
Fair enough, these guys are athletes, but as we’ve discussed wins and losses mean little in wrestling. Professional pride shouldn’t be at the forefront of your mind when one of your colleagues has been bent on ruining your life for weeks.
Every now and then it makes sense, like Johnny Gargano having to beat Tommaso Ciampa to be reinstated, but it can often take away from what’s supposed to be a hate fueled brawl.
