10 Greatest WWE WrestleMania Gimmick Matches
6. Firefly Funhouse (WrestleMania 36)
Is it a match per se? No. Is the “firefly funhouse” a discernible stipulation? Not really. But is the Firefly Funhouse match the most creative and bold piece of content to come out of WWE in many a year? Well, that’s a big yes!
The pandemic often brought out the worst in the company, but the immediate impact saw some real invention, peaking with this journey into the life, times, and mind of John Cena. Brought back for a ‘Mania match, Cena was lured to Bray Wyatt’s demented kids’ TV show set.
From there, what unfolded was a longform critique of Cena the wrestler and man. His initial difficulties getting over; his burial of younger stars; his unwillingness to turn heel; his increasing staleness. With commendable commitment, Cena sent himself up to the hilt, with Wyatt the cackling roastmaster.
This might be the peak of Bray’s WWE tenure, showing a mind operating on a different plane to anyone else’s. It’s a miracle that Vince signed off on this, and that Cena agreed to this skewering, but thank goodness they did.
