10 Highest Attended Non-WrestleMania Events In WWE History
1. SummerSlam 1992 - 80,000
Emanating from Wembley Stadium in London, SummerSlam 1992 remains the only major WWE pay-per-view to take place outside North America. Not only did it feature one of the greatest main event matches in the company's history but it may also have been the largest crowd up to that point as well.
With it being fairly well-known that WrestleMania III's 93,000 attendance figure is greatly inflated (with the actual number allegedly being approximately 78,000), there are those who believe SummerSlam 1992 like surpassed the draw of Hogan vs. Andre.
The show also set a merchandise record, as over $1.4 million in sales were recorded to go along with the live gate of $2.2 million.
The card featured every major superstar in the promotion at the time with the exception of Ric Flair, who interfered in the world title match. The Legion of Doom made a huge entrance on motorcycles, the Natural Disasters retained their tag titles, and Randy Savage was counted out against the Ultimate Warrior thanks to Flair's interference. An aborted Warrior heel turn would have made that storyline make more sense but no one ever accused Jim Hellwig of making sense very often.
Of course, the match everyone came to see was a showdown for the Intercontinental title, as Bret Hart defended against the massive crowd favorite, the British Bulldog. Hart called this match one of his favorites as he took pride in leading Davey Boy Smith to the best match of his career and thrilling the crowd with one of the greatest bouts in company history.
In the end, Bulldog broke Hart's signature Sharpshooter and, when Hart tried for a sunset flip, the Bulldog hooked Bret's legs and pinned him to win the title. It capped off a massive event and possibly the largest crowd in WWE history until WrestleMania 29.
