10 Jaw-Dropping Times WWE Blurred The Lines
1. Montréal Screwjob
But never before had that drama been exposed to the extent
it was at Survivor Series of 1997. You all know the drill by now: Bret Hart vs.
Shawn Michaels, WWE Championship, the end of the “New Generation” era.
With Bret Hart on his way to WCW, and refusing to lose the title on his own turf in Canada, Vince McMahon took matters into his own hands.
The finish to the match was kept secret from Hart, with Vince making his way to ringside and having the referee call for the bell when Michaels locked in the Sharpshooter. Never mind the fact that Bret didn’t even submit to the move…
Safe to say this was just about the most controversial moment in WWE history. Many still speculate as to whether or not this was real or staged, but if anything that only reinforces the fact that the lines had been blurred to an unprecedented degree.
The finish would be repeated in years to come, but never with so much realism behind it, and in all honesty there’ll probably never be another storyline as reality-based as this one.
