Chael Sonnen's bout with Anderson Silva at UFC 117 could have been one of the biggest upsets in the history of mixed martial arts.

After all, Silva had been the long-reigning UFC Middleweight Champion and had barely shown a single chink in his armour throughout his dominant run through the division. Sonnen meanwhile, had proven to be a solid talent throughout his career but had fallen at the final hurdle in his attempts to become a world champion.

When the two finally squared off Sonnen defied all expectations and put a beating on the Brazilian in a way no one could have predicted, not only dominating with his superior wrestling skills but also proving to be more than capable at holding his own on the feet with the Spider.

Having decisively won every round up to that point, Chael made the mistake of getting a little too comfortable in the BJJ black belt's guard in the final round, and was ultimately punished for his mistake by being submitted with a triangle choke.
