Hiromu Takahashi was the best wrestler in the world in 2018. He had just had the match of his career against Taiji Ishimori at the Best of the Super Juniors Final, won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship from Will Ospreay in a scintillating match at Dominion and was scheduled to defend his title against long time rival Dragon Lee at the San Francisco G1 Special.

The match was brilliant, an electrifying showdown between two sensational wrestlers. The two mesmerised the Californian fans with their flawless sequences and insane pace. It was on the path to being considered a classic when in the final minutes of the match, a botched Phoenix Plex from Lee led to Hiromu landing hard on his neck and breaking it.

He was able to finish the match by hitting the Timebomb but it was clear something was wrong, his usual exuberance and energy was gone as he could barely stand up. He was out for a year and a half because of the severity and it almost cost him his career. It's a sobering reminder of how dangerous this business can be; even a professional at the height of their career is not immune to brutal injury.
