Takayama might not be a well-known name to many wrestling fans, so here’s his career in a nutshell: for all you gamers out there, this man is the walking definition of a tank/damage sponge. His ability to withstand pain is legendary, and has many infamous moments to prove it.

Maybe it was because he started in UWFi, which taught shoot-fighting, or maybe it’s some naturally high pain tolerance. Whatever the reason behind his toughness is, it is extremely hard to bring Takayama down and even harder to keep him down. He has endured countless stiff strikes and head-drops, and given the kinds of wrestlers he was fighting most often, those were in high supply. Not even suffering a stroke stopped him from wrestling

But his biggest demonstration of toughness came at Pride 22, when he took on Don Frye in an MMA fight. This wasn’t one of those short Ronda Rousey matches that ended with one well-placed move; Frye and Takayama beat each other to a pulp for over six minutes, including about 2 minutes of non-stop unprotected punches to the face.

Both guys were even holding the other’s head in place with one hand, and striking it as hard as possible with the other. It’s unbelievable how long Takayama withstood in that environment, considering he was going into that fight with a big disadvantage.

Yoshihiro Takayama is still wrestling, even after taking all of that punishment. Because of that, he is, for all intents and purposes, indestructible.
