Heading into the 2015 Royal Rumble, it looked like Roman Reigns was certain to win. Fans seemed to accept it, though since his return from injury, WWE had badly mishandled his babyface run. Heading into the show, however, something surprising happened - beloved hero Daniel Bryan, whose status had been very much up in the air due to a neck injury, was cleared to return.

WWE decided to put Bryan in the Rumble match, meaning that all of a sudden, everyone wanted to see him win it. As Reigns was still viewed as the likely victor, though, fans turned on him hard, booing him viciously at every opportunity.

When the match came, Bryan entered early and was eliminated in 10 minutes. Fans were beside themselves - not only had their choice failed to win, but he hadn't even had an impressive showing. WWE officials hoped that by getting Bryan out of the match early, fans would get over their anger and be more accepting by the time Reigns won.

It didn't work out that way. The fans hijacked the match, booing the contest - and especially Reigns - for the rest of the evening. "Rusev" chants emerged when "The Bulgarian Brute" and Reigns were the last men left. When Reigns did win, the boos could not be ignored. Even an endorsement from The Rock couldn't change the mood in the arena.
