Nasa’s moon landings. John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Roswell and Area 51. Just about every major event of the past millennium has drawn calls of conspiracy from distrusting nonbelievers, and professional wrestling is no different.

Wrestling has always been marketed as a performance art, and while the lines between “real” and “fake” were torn down a long time ago, a guarded sense of secrecy still surrounds the business’ backstage goings-on. Social media and the internet make it hard to keep anything a secret anymore, yet talks of scandal, cover-ups, and conspiracies persist.

It’s in wrestling fans’ nature to be inquisitive and look for meaning in even the smallest details. Wrestling is built on blurring the lines between truth and fiction, even in this era of apparent transparency, and its perpetuated by mediums like Twitter, Reddit, and the dirt sheets. Wrestling fans get hold of the tiniest slither of information, over-analyze it to the extreme, and all of a sudden there’s a full-blown conspiracy theory doing the rounds.

Regardless of whether these ideas are crackpot nonsense or not, they’re fun to explore. Wrestling history is a labyrinth of zany could-be conspiracies, and if you approach each with an open mind and a pinch of salt, you might just get wrapped up in them.

Don your foil hats, it’s time to go down the rabbit hole. Here are the 10 most insane conspiracy theories in WWE history.

10. WWE & The Illuminati

The Illuminati are a favourite topic of conspiracy theorists around the world, so it’s only natural that WWE would become subject to such tales. Believers will tell you that the Illuminati are a secret organisation of the world’s most powerful and influential elites. They’re a centuries-old group quietly pulling the strings behind the world’s major goings-on, with their ultimate goal being a one-world government that will allow them complete control over the entire planet.

From Jay-Z to Starbucks, it’s seems that most of the world’s major individuals and corporations have been linked to the Illuminati at some point. In WWE’s case, the theory comes from the company’s regular use of Illuminati imagery like the all-seeing eye and pyramid during their programming. The Ascension’s ring attire and entrance video provide the most recent example, but Triple H has also been known to sport such symbols.

One particularly daft theory suggests that The Ascension are Illuminati plants set loose to destroy the sport from within. If that’s the case than the Illuminati must really suck at their jobs, because poor old Konnor & Viktor have been as effective as an umbrella in a hurricane. Still, this idea will likely persist for as long as they’re active in WWE.
