To talk about something not involving real-world corporate apathy to the struggles of their employees, here’s fake eye mutilation!

The Eye for an Eye match is something special, something that stands out on a brand new horizon of WWE’s insanity: a match between two former World Champions where the only way to win is by gouging the other’s eye out. It was a feud that was started by a cult leader jamming a luchador into steel steps, ended with projectile vomit and fake blood everywhere, and progressed into Rey’s big son getting whipped by a kendo stick.

Wrestling is great.

The Eye for an Eye match is a perfect callback to Ruthless Aggression in that they doubled down on the craziest feud idea possible and get supernaturally talented workers to execute it brilliantly. Mysterio and Rollins wrestled a banger match on Extreme Rules, doing a highly athletic, brutal hardcore brawl that would pause every few minutes or so for eye-related punishment.

When Rey broke apart a kendo stick and tried to jab it into Seth’s eye as the fake crowd pounded on plastic barriers, fans around the world lost their collective minds.

Wrestling purists will actively resist against this, but it’s a testament to how weird WWE is that one of their only cohesive angles on Raw involved one of the most popular wrestlers of all time getting his eye impaled on steel steps Twice. What a weird year for professional wrestling.
