10. Hated Vince McMahon's Original Concept For His WWF Run
Story: Joining the then-WWF in 1996, Mick Foley was more than a little disheartened to learn what Vince McMahon, the most powerful man in the entire industry, had in store for him. Instead of being given a role that he could thrive under, Foley was to be handed a hokey gimmick which seemed to more scream 'Mantaur' than 'main event'. Apparently, McMahon proudly outlined his new gimmick, one which see Foley take the name of 'Mason The Mutilator'. Countering, the wrestler said he felt 'Mankind The Mutilator' was better, but Vince was having none of it. Eventually, Foley was able to beat his boss into submission, successfully having his name simply be 'Mankind', which he felt was a far better title. In Foley's opinion, had he simply accepted whatever the WWF had in store for him, he would have struggled to get past the mid-card, instead fitting nicely into being just another awful gimmick that the company was famous for presenting in the mid-90's. Why People Believe It: Mick Foley writes about this particular time in his first autobiography, 'Have A Nice Day', never once hiding the fact that he felt the original name was horrendous. Several different concept drawings exist online, showing the different costume ideas the WWF had in mind for the character too. Should We Believe It: Yes, it's definitely fair to say that Foley wasn't a fan of the whole 'Mason The Mutilator' idea, because he felt it was really cheesy and not something he'd enjoy doing. Further to that, Mick was even fairly down on the idea of wearing a mask, because he felt it would impair his ability to work matches properly, and would prove uncomfortable.
