The Attitude Era was a cutthroat time.

It was a time in which ambition was rewarded, and there was a lot - nowhere near enough, but this is wrestling - of money to be made. And you didn't even need to be some great artist to make it. All you had to do was say the word "ass" an awful lot and equip yourself with a catchphrase.

Enter Billy Gunn, who was a riot when the New Age Outlawz were at their peak. But when the act became tired, he, being the ripped and outrageously tall member of the team who wasn't a liability, got the push. It did not pan out.

It did not pan out because two sharks sensed that it wasn't panning out, and punched down at poor Billy to get themselves over at his expense.

The Rock's famous 1999 assassination was hilarious, from his intonation to the idea that God - omniscient, mind you - was so unmoved by Billy Gunn that he didn't even know his name.

Edge took what was left of Gunn's corpse and buried it two years later by vowing not to "Billy Gunn" the King Of The Ring Title.

Billy Gunn was a synonym of failure in the year 2001.
