10 Movies About Wrestling We Actually Want To See
1. The Montreal Screwjob
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Yes, Brazzers is making a porn parody of The Montreal Screwjob. Why? Because it has the word ‘screw’ in it, and apparently there’s no concept or scenario sexier than Bret Hart wrongfully dropping the WWF World Heavyweight Championship to Shawn Michaels. I just can’t wait to see who they get to play Earl Hebner…
But at least somebody is trying to adapt the story of The Montreal Screwjob, the infamous night when Vince McMahon plotted to illegitimately cost Hart the title, allegedly to stop him from taking it to WCW. It’s one of the most dramatically rich stories to occur both in and outside of a professional wrestling ring, and although we’ve seen it touched upon in the Bret Hart documentary Wrestling With Shadows, as well as in WWE-sanctioned sit-down interviews, we’ve yet to see a feature film that’s full dedicated to retelling the lead-up, occurrence, and fallout of the Screwjob itself.
More so than Paige’s rise to the top of WWE’s Diva’s division, the Screwjob is one of the most important and ground-breaking moments in the history of the industry; one of the earliest and most glaring peeks behind the curtain of kayfabe, and an event that gave birth to the evil character of Mr McMahon.
A well-researched, authoritative documentary would be the optimal choice here, although given how that might display Vince and WWE in a negative light, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see such a thing. By the same logic, Vince McMahon probably won’t give clearance for his trademarks to be used in a fictional movie about him screwing over his own talent, but a big-budget adaptation of the event with some star power attached would make for compelling viewing, even if some names and details had to be altered.
