10 No-Win WWE Situations
3. Airbrushing History
The uproar that followed the announcement of The Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal last month once again underlined the reason that WWE tends to tread on eggshells when it comes to referencing controversial performers from its past.
Mention the likes of Chris Benoit and Hulk Hogan (whose indiscretions are, needless to say, in no way comparable) and the company will inevitably be charged with the accusation of glorifying - or else just ignoring - what they did wrong.
On the other hand, by deliberately airbrushing them from the history books, they simply come across as nervous and guilt-ridden. This is particularly true in the case of Benoit, the circumstances of his death having sparked an uncomfortable public debate around WWE's Wellness Policy back in 2007.
In a sense, however they confront issues like these going forward, it's going to be awkward - especially if they take the Moolah approach, a massive misreading of public opinion that could, if left unaddressed, have left a dark cloud hanging over the upcoming WrestleMania.
