Supposedly, John Cena vs. Roman Reigns was the scheduled main event for WrestleMania in Dallas this year, until Cena was the latest superstar to go down with a serious injury. Like Reigns vs. Lesnar II, Reigns vs. Cena is another marquee match-up that WWE will have in their back pocket that will draw a big crowd. Like Hogan vs. Warrior at WrestleMania VI, Reigns vs. Cena would likely be presented as the super babyface match of the decade, the present vs. the future. Every decade or so, the WWE looks to position a new flagship performer as the face of their brand, but along with the rise of the new comes the descent of the current brand champion as they slowly make their way out of the brightest spotlight. It happens to all the iconic WWE mainstays: Hogan experienced it in '92-'93, the Hitman in '96-'97, Michaels in '98, Austin in '02-'03 and John Cena will be next - it's just a question of when. Another question that exists, although WWE does not want to admit this at the moment, is whether or not Roman Reigns will actually be the man to succeed John Cena. As previously mentioned, Ultimate Warrior was believed to be "the man" for the future when he dethroned Hogan at WrestleMania VI, but history proved otherwise. Lex Luger, Diesel, and others had similar opportunities and were positioned to have "their moments", but it was a different superstar that eventually became the next torchbearer. The company, Paul Levesque and Vince McMahon in particular are determined to get Roman Reigns to that level and see him take the mythical brass ring. A match with John Cena is another step in the coronation of Reigns as "the man". The company knew it and had it scheduled for their biggest show ever at AT&T Stadium this April. That obviously won't be the setting, but barring an egregious fall from grace, Roman Reigns will wrestle John Cena in a heavily promoted main event and it may happen sooner rather than later.
