10 Original WrestleMania 34 Plans WWE Had To Change

5. John Cena Vs. Rey Mysterio

All talk of Rey Mysterio going head-to-head with John Cena in a featured spot at WrestleMania 34 died out when Rey tore his biceps at an independent show in early-March.

It's important to note that WWE hadn't fully made their minds up on what part the masked legend would play in New Orleans, but Sports Illustrated writer Justin Barrasso reported he was pencilled in as Cena's opponent. At one point, Rey seemed more likely than The Undertaker, partly due to 'Taker's soft retirement last year and the fact he's broken down physically.

During his comeback cameo at the 2018 Royal Rumble, Mysterio looked back to his best and there would have been interest in a feud opposite Cena. Once news of Rey's unfortunate injury trickled down to WWE, all bets were off and Cena went full steam ahead with his anti-Undertaker promos on Raw.

Seeing Rey bump around for Cena and pull the best from him (much like AJ Styles did in 2016 and 2017) would have been preferable to Cena vs. 'Taker from an in-ring perspective. It wouldn't have carried the same weight as seeing The Undertaker return however.
